For layout and production you should have some training in graphic arts and typography. You will need to know Quark XPress (page layouts) and Photoshop (production) plus some Illustrator skills. Print production is about processing photos (retouching, color correcting and manipulating), page design (art direction) and page layout (flowing the text and photos into the layout that the art director designed).
